Kurt Weil and Wine in Rüdesheim am Rhein 22-23 March, 2014

Dear Members,

Our Captain of Music, Andrew Wise, and CamSoc Soprano Penelope Turner are taking their Kurt Weil tour to Germany. Those of you who were delighted by the recital at the Archiduc last year will be excited to hear that they will be playing in the heart of Germany's idyllic wine region to the West of Wiesbaden (Frankfurt). As you can imagine they have had great fun turning this opportunity into a weekend of culture and wine tasting for all those who decide to take a break from the Capital of Europe for the weekend of the 22nd March. There will be a prime table at the concert for all Oxbridge in attendance.

There are four a la carte options, separately priced: make your selection and book accordingly through the single e-mail address: ingeborg.nolte@skynet.be

Ms. Nolte hopes to have all reservations by February 28th, so as to be able to arrange everything! Please mention your affiliation when reserving and if you are looking for a car share.

Your tour guide will meet you at the hotel, a taxi shuttle is organised, to take you to the "Abbey of Eberbach" (30 mins along the river Rhine). We have a nice walk through the abbey (http://kloster-eberbach.de), wine tasting and a lot of information about the monastery (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eberbach_Abbey).

The monastery: Over the centuries since its founding by St. Bernhard, the famous abbot of the Clairvaux reform monastery in Burgundy, the work of the Cistercian monks has had a decisive influence on the prevailing spiritual thinking and the architecture of the buildings erected here. Today, more than 200 years after Napoleon drove the last monks into flight, you can still feel the effects of this thinking and architecture with your own hands. In the past, the monasteries were the building blocks for a network of institutions, which connected all of the European countries, and which formed essential crystallization points for the development of our Western culture. Today, the cultural traditions which originated from these developments are carefully nurtured by the Eberbach Monastery Foundation as a historical legacy and are shared with a large number people through the numerous cultural events held here. All interior scenes of the movie "The Name of the Rose" were shot here (except for the library).

Lunch at the beautiful monastery restaurant (not included in the quoted price).

An opportunity to taste more wine and local beers and to visit the interesting monastery culinary shop. Return by taxi shuttle. Duration of the tour 4 hours
