There will be a reception from 12.00, with lunch at 12.30.  Mr. Westlake will speak on the topic “Fleshing out the Lisbon Treaty’s provisions on participatory democracy”.  Mr Westlake has had a fascinating career, and has opinions on many subjects, you can find out more about both him and the EESC by visiting the website:

Martin Westlake (Oxxford 1976) took a Masters at the Johns Hopkins University (SAIS) and a PhD at the European University Institute, Florence. He has worked in various European institutions, including the Council of Europe, the Council of Ministers and the European Commission. In his last post in the Commission (DG Education and Culture) he was responsible at administrative level for creating and pushing through the Erasmus Mundus programme. He joined the EESC in 2003 as Head of Communication and served as Director of Consultative Work before being appointed Secretary General. He has written widely about European and British politics and institutions and is the author of a biography of Neil Kinnock (Little, Brown, 2001). He was a Professor at the College of Europe 2000-2005 (course on the European Parliament) and is an Associate Member of the Centre for Legislative Studies at the University of Hull.
